Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Foundation?
The King Springs Elementary Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax deductible organization. The KSEF is dedicated to providing educational opportunities that otherwise would not be a part of the instructional program at King Springs Elementary.
Why was the Foundation formed?
The Foundation was formed to supplement educational expenses and school improvements beyond the funding abilities of the Cobb County school system as well as funding restrictions placed on all local PTAs. While we recognize the incredible efforts and success of our PTA, school foundations provide even more flexibility with regard to how funding can be used to support our school. For example, a foundation can raise money for “big ticket items” and roll over the money from year to year, pay for teacher training, and even hire additional instructors and staff. We believe that to maximize our growth opportunities and provide the best possible education for our children, the KSE Foundation is critical to our continued success.
What is the history of the Foundation?
Many of the parents that began work in recent years to establish the initial Foundation unfortunately are no longer at KSE. The KSE School Council saw a need to help support this worthy effort and carry on the very important work they started. The Council then worked diligently during the 2013-14 school year to create a focus on the re-establishment and expansion of the KSE Foundation. Also in this collaborative spirit, the PTA supported this initiative and shifted management of the annual Golf Classic fundraiser to the Foundation. The Foundation continues to work closely with school leadership, the PTA, and the Council as strategic goals are set collaboratively.
Who is on the Foundation?
Anyone can be on the Foundation! The KSEF is operated by a Board of Directors comprised of the school principal, parents, faculty, and community partners for the benefit of our school. Initial Executive Officers consisting of a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and school principal were established at the end of the 2013-14 school year. Sub-committees include Party for the Pride, Golf Classic, Parking and Linda Keeney scholarship. Additionally, liaisons representing the PTA and the School Council were invited to join the Foundation in the spirit of cross-functional support. If you are interested in serving on the Foundation, reach out to any of our Board members or contact us at [email protected].
How does the Foundation raise funds?
Funds are raised through a variety of ways including the Support the Pride donations, Golf Classic, Party for the Pride spring event, company matching, and grants.
How is funding used?
The largest expense, ~$30,000/year, is for the subscriptions for our classrooms.
$25,000 each year is paid directly to the grade levels and other classrooms for grant requests, such as the KSE chickens in the spring, STEM Night, novels series for grade levels, reading and math games, and year-end celebrations.
$20,000 is used annually for teacher training, which includes Orton Gillingham, Love and Logic and substitutes for teacher planning days.
$15,000 is used to pay for grade level field trips.
Other expenses include funding requests, Linda Keeney scholarship, Science Olympiad and some start-up costs in August.
